About this area

Why this area matters

Education is where ANANDJIRA began. We believe the first years of life are decisive in shaping a child's character, intelligence and confidence.

At the "Happy and Smart Child" Community Preschool we welcome children aged 3 to 5, with qualified teachers, Portuguese and English lessons and a graduation ceremony that guarantees a place in Grade 1. We also provide after-school support and raise families' awareness of the importance of schooling.

What we do

Main interventions

Concrete actions we carry out with communities, schools and partners.

  • Early childhood education for children aged 3 to 5

At the community preschool, with qualified educators, guided play and preparation for first grade.

  • After-school support and follow-up

Help with homework and close follow-up of the children who struggle most.

  • Portuguese and English lessons

Language classes from an early age, so children start school with more confidence.

  • Building and equipping community preschools

Safe classrooms, furniture and teaching materials in neighbourhoods that had none.

  • Raising families' awareness of the importance of schooling

Conversations with parents and carers so that every child, boys and girls, goes to school.

Our approach

How we work in each area

  1. 1

    Listen to communities

We start from the needs identified with families, local leaders and schools.

  2. 2

    Act with local partners

We work with the authorities, schools, health facilities and other organisations.

  3. 3

    Follow up closely

Our volunteers and staff follow each child, family and group in the field.

  4. 4

    Be accountable

We measure results and share reports with partners and the community.
